There’s rap in my rock!

The new Handsome Furs album, Face Control, gets daily burn in the Camry. I highly recommend it, and, on a side note, what a sexy couple.

If you peeped their debut, Plague Park, you know the Furs’ deal: It’s Dan Boeckner’s project with his wife, Alexei Perry. Boeckner’s “day job” is holding down the Springsteen half of crucial Boss/Bowie double dragon Wolf Parade, and, as a Fur, he still does fist-pump wounded-warrior rock. But instead of the Parade’s wine-drunk chord hog Spencer Krug for a foil, he’s up against chilly beatz.

Plague Park came off like an experiment to me. What I took from it was, “Damn, it’s hard to fuck up a Boeckner song. These things are super duty tuff work.” Face Control is also an experiment, but where Plague Park was scuzzy and tinny—on purpose, no doubt, but messy—Face Control is a guided missile. It hits harder than most hiphop. For 2009, easily the best use of an 808 in a rock record.

Thanks for the heads up on this interview. His guitar sounds much more awesome when live. I’m really diggin’ Face Control.

You kinda mentioned this, but I was just thinking the other day how Boeckner is such an elemental songwriter: fire (though more in the figurative internal sense), earth and water are omnipresent in all his work. He’s easily one of my favorite musicians out there.

Yeah, you’re probably right, but I also think Face Control succeeds in large part because Alexei has really learned her way around the MicroKorg. Some of her synth/drum machine work is fantastically ornate, especially when compared to Plague Park.

It’s that time of year again when Apple releases a new iPad, so what should you do with your old one? And should you get the Wi-Fi only version or one with 3G/4G access?
In this edition of Ask Maggie, I help a reader who is jonesing for the upcoming iPad 3 figure out what to do with his iPad 2. I get some good advice from the CEO of the gadget trade-in site Gazelle. I also help another reader decide whether he should buy a Wi-Fi-only version of the iPad or if he should splurge on the one that has built-in wireless broadband connectivity.
