New Cage: Rad

Download the new Cage song. It’s called “Nothing Left to Say,” and it’s emo as fuck. Shia Labeouf is directing a video for it this month. And, yes, the Cage biopic is still being talked about and apparently happening. I know this because I read a press release.

He’s going to put out a seven song EP called I Never Knew You as a Def Jux/Adult Swim venture (Doom, Witchdoctor, Flying Lotus...Adult Swim has good taste) “sometime in the next two months,” says said release. It’ll be downloadable for free, as any album-hyping EP should be. Depart From Me, the LP follow-up to his career re-defining Hell’s Winter (a minor masterpiece of grown, fucked hiphop), comes out June 30th.

The argument about Cage (remember when it used to be whether it was fair to compare him to Eminem?) has turned into this: Is the old, Brick City cadence-copping, PCP-smoking, patricidal Cage of “Agent Orange” fame

better than the emo-rock greasy hair hipster cowboy shirt Cage?

I will say yes, all day. His hardcore is still gritty. His beats are better. He is a good muse for El-P. He is challenging himself instead of making the same shock jock stab your eyes out and shit on your sister rehash. And when he wants to just unleash with some “doesn’t mean anything much but fits the mood” goth hop (hate the term...hate it...), BOOM, it’s a local heater.
