Black Caesar was a group formed in the early nineties previously known as Foul Play. Primarily consisting of artists Tommy Gunn Aka Messiah, Hooligan, and the later addition of Young Have Not the group endured the turbulent ways of the industry throughout their tenure. Initially recording a demo tape under the group name Foul Play which was produced by then in house producer Mario the group signed to Wild Pitch Records in the early nineties. The deal never absolved into anything greater than underground notoriety from the songs fans were able to hear. The group later regrouped in the late 90’s under the name “Black Caesar”. Under the new name the group was able to secure another major label deal with what at the time was one of the biggest record labels Tommy Boy Records.

Having an east meets west coast vibe along with their canny ability to be lyrical and morph styles made them highly versatile. Though the group featured these strong points the only notable release from Tommy Boy was for the soundtrack “Nothing To Lose” with their song “Whats Going On”. After several years of being on the backburner the label never set the group on the pedestal for release. Growing tired of the wait the group released what was supposed to be their major label debut independently in the late nineties with features from Brotha Lynch Hung and Roc Of Heltah Skeltah. The album seemed to be incomplete in a sense with rough mixes and some songs that seemed like works in progress but after a decade in the game it was well overdue. Many call it a local classic that helped rejuvenate the scene at the time of its release.
