Def Dee - Cheap Heat

I first caught wind of Def Dee as the centerpiece of the 96 Pickup crew, a loose-knit collective that were creating vintage NYC headphone hiphop grime in Seattle; inspired by such seminal New Yitty gospels as Petestrumentals and UN Or U Out, Dee’s classic vibe belied his young ears and West Coast pedigree. Producing and arranging one of 2010-or-so’s absolute best local rap offerings, Gravity-an album full of subway head-nod candy anchored by the braggadocio of MC Language Arts (now just La). Since then, LA has dropped another stellar LP, with another producer; I’ve been waiting to hear some new Def Dee for a minute though.

Which brings us, thankfully, to Cheap Heat, a humble"beat tape”, really a perfect mix for boomin in ya boomin in ya boomin in ya jeep; the beats harken back like a throwback Sonics jersey, analog as they wanna be, jumping and jittery, evoking Dilla’s linfluence in a non-corny manner. My best advice for right now: get this here, throw it on, shut up, and vibe out.
